AVID
Program Overview:
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a national college readiness system that targets students in the academic middle from underrepresented socioeconomic groups on college campuses who have great academic potential. AVID delivers a demanding college-preparatory curriculum and facilitates student involvement in extracurricular activities. The goal of AVID is for students to enroll and be successful in rigorous four-year post secondary institution and become educated and responsible leaders.
In order for students to be selected as part of their AVID cohort, they participate in a rigorous selection process, which included an application, teacher recommendations, and an interview. AVID is a four-year commitment to a course that meets as often as other core subjects, like English or math. By participating in this program, students intensify their academic responsibilities because AVID requires various writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading assessments in addition to all other graduation requirements. Approximately 180 students are enrolled in the AVID Elective in grades 9-12 at GHS.
The Greenwich Alliance for Education supports AVID in the Greenwich Public Schools as well as AVID Alumni through their AVID SUCCESS program.
Joining AVID at GHS:
Each year, the GHS AVID Application for rising freshmen will be distributed by the 8th grade School Counselor at each middle school. The timeline is within the standard course selection process covering January, February and March each year. GHS AVID will determine the application deadline and date for interviews in collaboration with the 8th grade teams. We look forward to learning more about you from your application and talking with you during your interview with a member of our GHS AVID team!
For additional details, including application information, please see the Greenwich Public Schools AVID page.
