Lillian Butler Davey Communication Awards

Submissions will be essays written in response to a specific assignment in any of the academic subjects; approximate length between 500 and 1500 words. A maximum of one academic essay may be submitted by any student.

Note:  In the title section of their entry applications, students should also name the academic course and describe the particular assignment.

Criteria to consider:

• Appropriate response to the assignment
• Strong focus and interest
• Sufficient and convincing supporting information
• Original and/or convincing discovery or conclusion
• Use of language
• Organization of ideas

Submissions will be written scripts that include dialogue, stage directions, and playwright’s notes, as appropriate. The scripts must be performable within the limits of GHS capabilities.  Presentation may be a staged reading or a memorized performance, as scheduled into the Magic Circle original works production.

Submissions will be any student-written article that has been published between May 1, 2023 and April 11, 2024.

Submissions will be original poetry in any form.  A maximum of three poems may be submitted by any poet. If you are submitting more than one poem, each poem MUST BE submitted separately.

Submissions will be speeches that last between 3 and 6 minutes of speaking time.  Written versions of the speeches – either verbatim, on index cards, or in outline form – must be submitted.  The actual speeches will be delivered, not taped. They must be spoken and not read.  Applicants will deliver speeches for judging.  Attendance at this session is mandatory, unless prior arrangements have been made.

Submissions will be narratives;  approximate length of between 500 and 2000 words.  They may be conventional or experimental stories.

Submissions will be filmed productions with content length between 3 minutes and 45 minutes of running time.  The film submitted should have a title and production credits (including attribution, if needed) in addition to content.  The film must be on a DVD or private (YouTube) link.
