Theater Arts

The On Stage Musical performance is a product of the semester of work in the Onstage course.  The goal of the program is to teach students about musical theater by having them engage in the creative process of script exploration, auditions, rehearsals and performance of a full length musical. Onstage classes rehearse independently until the week before the show.  In that final week, the students come together to create the production.  In order to give students the fullest performance experience, there are usually eight different casts and students from all four grades are represented in principal roles. We have produced You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Wizard of Oz, Bye Bye Birdie, Pippin, Annie, The Pajama Game, Oliver, Working and Company in past years.  On Stage is perfect for any student who wants to learn more about musical theater or loves performing. No experience is needed to be part of the class and everyone gets to perform live on stage!

This festival takes place over a Friday and Saturday at the start of June. Registration and participation is open to anyone in GHS. Participants attend a couple of after school “classes” and then when the special Friday arrives, student participants write, revise, rehearse and perform an original play on Saturday evening. It is an exciting and creative and completely unique experience and production.

Improv Troupe meets after school and is open to all high school students. The schedule of meetings is set out at the start of the year. , Meetings focus  on the skills and techniques necessary for the creation of character and scenes in improvisational theater work. Participation in improv games is part of the activity and students decide whether they will choose to perform. Great fun, team work, spontaneity and great comedy are all emphasized.

Students interested in creating all of the elements that make theater special, including, lighting, sound design, set design and building and props.  Students not only work to create all of these important elements, but can also work as part of the run crew for the actual performances. It is a group with great purpose and camaraderie. Students who participate can plan a schedule with the Technical Director which fits their own time availability.

Thespians are members of an international HONOR SOCIETY for theater, the International Thespian Society, which is a division of The Educational Theater Association. Thespians earn their membership by meeting a set of requirements which have been roughly consistent since 1987.  Thespianship is an honor earned for having a number of accomplishments and responsibilities. Thespian provide leadership, guidance, support, and servants to other Theater students and to the Theater program generally.
