Sailing - Boys & Girls
GHS Sailing is a co-ed team consisting of both Varsity and JV sailors. GHS sailing is part of the Fairfield County Sailing League and races against other high schools in New England Schools Sailing Association (NESSA), a group of approximately eighty public and private schools in the six New England States. Each year, our goal is to qualify for national regattas in both fleet racing and team racing. Many of our sailors have gone on to successfully compete for top-ranked college varsity sailing teams.
Practice: Varsity practices after school 4 days a week from 3:30-6:00pm at Grass Island. JV practices one day a week from 3:30-6:00.
Regattas: the regatta schedule has been modified this season due to COVID and will mostly likely take place on weekends. Not every sailor is expected to attend every regatta.
Parent of the Day: in order for our sailors to be out on the water, the sailing team is required to have one adult safety point person on land at every practice and regatta. Each sailor's family is asked to cover several Parent of the Day "shifts" over the course of the season.
Registration: each sailor must register on the Greenwich High School Athletic website and must file an up-to-date Physical Exam for Sports Participation Form with the Greenwich High School Health Office prior to try-outs.
Swim Test: all sailors are required to pass a swim test before team try-outs. Sailors must be able to swim 2 laps (50 yards) and tread water for one minute. The swim test will be conducted at the GHS pool.
Try-outs: sailors will be evaluated on boat handling, commitment, and coachability.
Bring your PFD and drysuit. Let us know if you need to borrow one for tryouts. Please let Coach Henry know if you cannot make it.
Prior to try-outs, sailors are asked to email a sailing resume describing their sailing experience to Coach Henry Millette.
Sailors are required to have their own Coast Guard Approved PFD (life jacket) and drysuit. PFD and drysuit can be borrowed for try-outs only.
