Skiing - Boys & Girls

Program Overview:

On the first day, you must have registered on the GHS Athletic Department website.  You will not be allowed to tryout if you haven't.  This will count as an absence.  You must also bring the tryout rules and procedures signed by athletes and parents as well as the completed CISL Registration Form.

The start date for tryouts is TBD based on snow and location is TBD depending on the weather.  Coach Dunne will email all details as soon as they become available.  Be prepared that week for on snow tryouts or land tryouts at GHS.  Tryouts and practices will be held from 3:00-5:00pm.  Be prepared to be available during that time.  As long as the weather holds out, land tryouts will be outside.

There will be cuts, 80% of the evaluation is based on skiing/racing ability.  The team will be chosen based on conditioning assessment and time trials based on snow.  You will be tested on the course at the Mt. Southington Ski Area.  Ski evaluation is based on times, control on course and overall ability.  Location decision is contingent upon availability of snow.  The remaining 20% will be based upon performance at land tryouts to be held at GHS.  Land tryouts are strength and conditioning, attitude and attendance.  Athletes will complete mile, push-ups, sit-ups, and the 40 yard dash as part of their conditioning assessment.  The best performance results from dry land and time trials will be used to determine the 15 boys & 15 girls that will be chosen for the ski team.

If you miss any part of school, excused or unexcused, you cannot participate in practice or a race.  If you miss two days of tryouts you will be cut from the team.

If you cannot attend practice or a race, you must email Coach Dunne prior.  If you miss any part of school, excused or unexcused, participation in a practice or race is not allowed.

Time Commitment:

Practice will be held Monday-Thursday.  There is no practice during Christmas or February breaks.  The league has been informed that our vacation is a week before the traditional break.  They try not to schedule races during that week.  As a result, races may be doubled up (Wednesday/Thursday) one week.

Dry land practices are held at GHS from 3:00-5:00pm.  On snow practices are held once a week on Mondays or Tuesdays between 3:15-9:00pm at Mt. Southington.  We depart GHS at 3:15.  Our schedule will vary due to weather and snow conditions.  Please check GHS Athletics Ski Team sit for all updates and changes.

Races are held at Mt. Southington on a rotating basis on either Wednesday or Thursday.  We will depart GHS at 2:00pm and students will be dismissed from class at 1:45pm.  The team is made up of 10 varsity skiers and 5-7 junior varsity skiers.  The coaches will determine how people are placed in the line-up for the first race by time, ability and experience.

February Break:
The Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League (CISL) has been contacted regarding Greenwich's winter vacation.  We are scheduled one week earlier than the rest of the schools competing.  Please understand that if races are cancelled prior to break, there is a high likelihood that they will be rescheduled for GHS during winter vacation.

Dryland tryouts start the week of November 29th - Mon-Thurs 2:45-4:00pm
Will consist of conditioning, team building exercises, in-class video instruction.

Dryland Time Trials will be the week of December 6th or 13th depending on snow conditions.  We will be testing push ups, sit ups, mile time, and 40 yard sprints.

Ski Time Trials start the week of December 13th or 20th depending on the weather.

IN Season Races and Training:
Races are at Mt. Southington on Thursdays starting January 6th.  Ski team trains and races Monday - Thursday so athletes racing on weekends have Friday for traveling.  The CISL race schedule can and usually does evolve during the season.

The following forms must be completed to tryout.  You will not be allowed to try out if one of these forms is missing:

Ski specific helmet is needed before on snow tryouts.

Clear or night goggles
