National Honor Society

(updated February 23, 2022)

Decision letters for the Class of 2023 have been emailed to students and their parents/guardians.  Please be aware that the NHS is not the same as a mailing you might receive about national scholars, etc. Only communication through GPS email or GPS letterhead is from our National Honor Society.

Juniors who reach eligibility with their final 6-semester GPA will be notified via email by the end of June, 2022 if they have met the 3.55 GPA requirement to submit a packet.  Please do NOT fill out and submit a packet if you were NOT notified of your eligibility. If you believe you have met the requirement of a 6-semester 3.55 cumulative GPA and did not receive an email, please contact the NHS adviser right away. Packets for newly eligible  juniors will be due in the fall, date to be determined.

Eligible juniors will receive one invitation to apply.  Failure to respond by the due date means the invitation is withdrawn  and the student cannot apply in the future.

Service Requirements During Covid-19 -- Classes of 2022, 2023, 2024

Due to the multiple restrictions in place because of Covid-19, the community service requirement is being reduced by 20 hours for all classes except incoming 9th graders. Instead of 60 hours total, students will need to document 40 hours by September of their senior year. The expectation prior to Covid was that students were earning approximately 20 hours a year for their first three years of high school. Please see "service" under Criteria for Selection for more information about what constitutes community service. The Class of 2025 will need to earn the full 60 hours.

The Greenwich High School chapter of the National Honor Society recognizes students for their exemplary scholarship, service, character and leadership. Membership is a privilege, not a right.

This site offers a description of the criteria for entrance into the Greenwich High School National Honor Society. If you still have a question after reading through the site, please send an e-mail to Ms. Maxon, the National Honor Society Adviser.

The Basics

Eligible candidates will meet the following criteria:

GPA must be 3.55 or higher by the end of junior year.

Community Service must total at least 45 hours by the packet submission deadline; 15 additional hours can be earned the summer after junior year for a total of 60 required hours. Students with fewer than 45 hours in April of junior year are not eligible to submit a packet. (update 10-28: please see above regarding service hours)

Leadership and character must be demonstrated consistently from 9th-11th grade.

See "Criteria for Selection" for details.

When

Eligible candidates will be notified in February of junior year. Some students will not become academically eligible until June of their junior year. Eligible students must fill out a packet, available on line. Students who meet eligibility requirements at the end of first semester of junior year will have a spring due date for the packet. Students who reach academic eligibility at the end of their junior year in June will have a fall due date. These due dates will be announced when students are notified of their eligibility and students will have approximately 8 weeks to complete the packet.  Failure to complete the packet on time means the student will not be offered membership and cannot apply at another time.

*The cumulative GPA cannot include modified grades or curriculum.
